What Is PTFE: Understanding the Material and What It Is Used For

Polytetrafluoroethylene is a fluoropolymer that confers benefits to other materials and equipment. It is commonly referred to as PTFE or the brand name Teflon™. Our Durcor®, PureFlex®, Endurance™, and ChemTite® Ethylene™ PTFE-lined products feature PTFE linings to take advantage of this polymer's qualities.

Properties of PTFE

PTFE is a fluoropolymer material made up of repeated tetrafluoroethylene molecules. The high concentration of fluorine in it provides it with unique properties:

  • Chemically inert
  • Corrosion-resistant
  • Flexible
  • Nonreactive
  • Nonflammable
  • Nontoxic under normal usage conditions

Suitable for use up to 260 °C, 500° F.

Benefits of Using PTFE-Lined Pipes

The benefits of using PTFE-lined steel or composite pipes and tanks include corrosion resistance, low leaching for high purity processes, increased longevity, and reduced internal friction. PTFE acts as a barrier to protect the external structure of pipes lined with it. This reduces wear on pipe system components, helping to extend their useful lifespan. Additionally, PTFE's non-stick qualities reduce friction inside pipes, resulting in smooth flowing fluids and less power consumption.

Applications of PTFE in Piping

Operations that move caustic, acidic, hazardous, corrosive, or high purity fluids through pipes will benefit from PTFE linings. Examples of applications include pipe, valve, fitting, and tank lining, gaskets, hoses, and surface coatings.

The material's excellent chemical resistance makes PTFE-lined piping systems ideal for use in corrosive and high purity applications in the chemical, petrochemical, semiconductor, energy (green hydrogen), pharmaceutical, mining (lithium), water and wastewater, and oil and gas industries. Its ability to tolerate high temperatures further expands its usefulness to fluid management systems where temperatures routinely reach up to 260° C, 500°F.
