The client operates a biosolids recovery plant for the local sewer utility. The biosolids reclaimed from the sewage treatment plant sludge are processed into an organic fertilizer which is used to fertilize lawns, gardens and golf courses. After preliminary dewatering, the sludge is metered through special valves to the 24 belt filter presses. The 2” control valves metering the solids to the belts were suffering excessive corrosion of the ball and seats after only a year of service. The resulting leakage allowed excess sludge to be deposited on the belts, putting the quality of the product in jeopardy. Plus, the cost of unscheduled valve maintenance was unacceptable.

After evaluating several vendors, the client chose the Nil-Cor® valve series 300 UL-T-H, which features a corrosion-resistant carbon fiber-reinforced FRP body. The ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) body liners and V-port zirconia ceramic ball provide exceptional erosion protection. After several months of rigorous testing, it was determined that the valve met the application requirements. Twenty-three valve packages were ordered. After four years of service, one valve was disassembled to see how they were holding up. Wear was so minor that additional inspection of the other valves was not warranted. The client is extremely satisfied with the maintenance-free performance of the Nil-Cor 300 UL-T-H in this very demanding application.
