Why Use PTFE-Lined Stainless-Steel Hoses in Data Center Cooling Systems vs Alternative Hose Types?
For hyperscale AI data centers, high-performance computing (HPC) clusters, and other facilities using direct-to-chip liquid cooling, PTFE-lined stainless-steel hoses are often selected for critical sections of the cooling infrastructure because the higher upfront cost is offset by reduced maintenance, longer service life, and lower risk of coolant-related failures.
Reasons why PTFE-lined stainless-steel hoses are ideal
1. Chemical compatibility
PTFE is highly resistant to water/glycol mixtures, corrosion inhibitors, dielectric coolants, cleaning chemicals and oxidation. This reduces the risk of hose degradation over time, especially if coolant chemistry changes or specialty fluids are used.
2. Very low permeability
PTFE has extremely low permeation compared to many elastomer hoses. Benefits include less coolant loss over time, reduced ingress of oxygen or contaminants, better long-term coolant quality, and lower maintenance requirements. This is especially important in closed-loop cooling systems.
3. High temperature capability
The typical temperature operating ranges of these hoses (depending on hose construction) are often significantly higher than data center cooling operating ranges which are typically around 60–120°F (15–50°C). Such temperature margins provide greater safety during abnormal operating conditions, resistance to heat during maintenance procedures, and longer service life.
4. Stainless steel braid provides mechanical protection
The stainless braid prevents hose expansion under pressure, improves burst pressure, protects against abrasion, resists crushing, and improves durability in dense equipment installations.
5. Minimal aging
Unlike rubber hoses, PTFE does not dry out, crack from ozone exposure, become brittle with age, lose plasticizers. A PTFE hose can often last significantly longer than EPDM or nitrile hoses if properly installed.
6. Clean internal surface
PTFE has an extremely smooth bore, which minimizes pressure loss, reduces particle accumulation, helps maintain flow characteristics, is easier to flush during commissioning. This can improve the reliability of precision cooling loops.
7. Pressure capability
A braided PTFE hose can typically handle substantially higher pressures than standard rubber hose, depending on diameter and construction. This provides additional safety margin for pump startup, pressure spikes, valve switching, and future system upgrades.
Stainless-Steel Hoses
PureFlex’s line of PTFE- and PFA-lined stainless-steel braided hoses and fittings, such as the UltraFlex™ Convoluted Hose, are ideal for data center cooling systems due to their high level of corrosion resistance and fluid handling capabilities. Both PTFE and PFA are highly chemical-resistant fluoropolymer plastics with high temperature and pressure capability.
